Charlotte Pump Station
Pump Station Improvements
Location: Rochester, NY
Owner: Monroe County
The City of Rochester constructed the Charlotte Pump station and force main in the late 1950s. In the fall of 2003, the Monroe County Department of Environmental Services retained Lu Engineers to prepare plans and specifications for the upgrade of the Charlotte Pump Station. The station had four pumps of different horse powers being 40 Hp, 150 Hp, 215 Hp and 200Hp. After considering the present worth cost and operational advantages of the different options, Lu Engineers recommended the utilization of two 45 Hp and two 215 Hp dry pit submersibles.
Another very important component of the design was the appearance of this particular pump station. The City of Rochester over the course of the past few years has made major improvements to the Charlotte area and the pump station had to be designed to blend into the surrounding of the area. The potential for odor generation was recognized because of the location of the station. Odor control facilities were incorporated in the design using activated carbon as the scrubbing source.
The final design was completed and included the following:
- New Sewage Grinder
- Odor Control System
- Two 45 Hp Variable Speed Pumps
- One 215 Hp Variable Speed Pump
- Replacement of Influent Gates
- Replacement of Valves and Actuators
- Grating, Ladders and Catwalks
- Improvements of Force Main Vault
- Flow Meter
- Architectural Improvements
Construction of the project commenced in March of 2005. The construction required coordination with the Department of Environmental Services to perform the force main repairs. DES personnel fused and installed a temporary HDPE force main to bypass flow so force main repairs could be completed.
