Brownfields
Orchard-Whitney Site
NYSDEC Environmental Restoration Program
Location: Rochester, NY
Owner: City of Rochester
The Orchard-Whitney Site was used for various commercial and industrial uses since the early 1900s including the production of electrical equipment, heat treating, plating, coal storage, boiler operations, petroleum fuel storage and industrial wastewater treatment, metal finishing, synthetic foam production, printing, plastics manufacturing, and warehousing. This site is commonly referred to as the “poster child” for brownfield projects in our area.
Lu Engineers was selected by the City of Rochester to complete a Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study and Interim Remedial Measures (IRM) at this site. Lu Engineers generated a NYSDEC approved Site Investigation/Remedial Alternatives Report (SI/RAR) which was used to select a remedy for the site. The initial task was a waste characterization and asbestos pre-demolition survey. After this task was complete and identified materials were successfully removed, on-site buildings were demolished. The project also consisted of installing and sampling numerous groundwater monitoring wells, collection samples from various environmental media, and a thorough off-site investigation to evaluate impacts. The next phase of the project is to implement recommended cleanup alternatives.
