Lu Engineers designed the Upper Viaduct Roadway at
the departure level of the new Terminal for the Greater Buffalo
International Airport. This elevated roadway is constructed from a
combination of precast and cast-in-place concrete elements. The main
structure, located in front of the terminal, is 500 feet long
(continuous over 14 spans) and 72 feet wide. The approaches are a
combination of mechanically stabilized earth embankments and precast
concrete bridge spans. The entire structure "floats" on sliding seismic
isolation bearings designed specifically for this project by Lu
Engineers.
Lu Engineers was also retained to provide construction inspection for
this and all other aspects of the new airport project including
landside, airside and terminal building construction.
